Inside a trading card shop at night, with illuminated glass display cases of graded cards, stocked shelves, a glass entrance, and a ceiling-mounted security camera and fog unit.

RETAIL SECURITY · TRADING CARD STORES

Five layers between a thief and your inventory.

A card shop holds more value per square foot than almost any retailer, and all of it fits in a duffel bag. Here is what stands in the way, from the sidewalk inward, after close and during trading hours.

A card shop storefront at night: a steel shutter closed over the left window, lit display cases and stock behind the right window, a dome camera and horn speaker under the fascia, security bars inside, and a fog unit on the ceiling

Cameras with talk-down

Verkada cameras and a horn speaker over the door. An operator sees the alarm, speaks to whoever is standing there, and starts the siren.

Works: open and closed · Before they're in · Leaves evidence

The shop above is a model, not a real store. Every layer is drawn where it would actually be fitted.

Layer by layer

How a break-in goes with all five in place

Each layer buys time and takes something away from the intruder

  1. 23:41Layer 1A vehicle backs onto the sidewalk. A person at the storefront while the store is armed raises the alarm, and the operator has live video.
  2. 23:41Layer 1The horn speaker tells them they are on camera and that police are being called. The siren starts.
  3. 23:42Layers 2 + 3They swing at the glass. The shutter takes the hit; on any pane without one, the film holds the glass in a single piece.
  4. 23:43Layers 4 + 5If they force a way in, the fog fires and the room goes white. The bars still sit between them and the cases.
  5. 23:44ResponsePolice are on the way to a verified report, with the operator describing the suspects and the vehicle live.
  6. MorningEvidenceThe whole event is clipped for police and your insurer. We reset the fog unit and check the shutter.

Layer 5 in action

Watch a room disappear

This is what an intruder sees seconds after the fog fires.

Demonstration footage. Fog behaviour and safety as stated by the manufacturer.

During trading hours

When it happens with the doors open

Most break-ins happen after close, but card shops also get hit in daylight: a group walks in, one heads for the case, and it's over in a minute. Panic buttons give your staff a way to respond without saying a word.

Fog + police

Fixed under the counter or carried as a wireless fob. According to UR Fog, one press fills the room with fog and alerts our monitoring centre, which calls police for an immediate dispatch.

Silent alarm

Nothing happens in the store. Our monitoring centre is alerted and police are dispatched, without escalating a situation where someone may be armed.

Many shops fit one of each: a fog button by the cases and a silent one at the till. Panic buttons work with Verkada and Ajax alarm systems, and every shop gets a staff training manual.

  3. 14:12FogAccording to UR Fog, the fog fires so nobody can see the cases, the stock, or the door.

After pressing, staff step away, stay low if the fog fires, and move to the exit or the back room they've practised. They never chase or block anyone.

TCG Watch · Layer 6

The thief who hit another shop shouldn't be a stranger at yours.

Card shops protected by KingsGuard share one watchlist of people reported to police for theft or fraud. If someone on it walks into another member shop, a KingsGuard operator checks the match, the shop owner is alerted, and we contact the police.

  1. 1

    Reported

A member shop is hit and files a police report. The report and a photo are attached to the listing.

  2. 2

    Recognized

Verkada cameras at every member shop's entrance check visitors against the watchlist.

  3. 3

    Checked

A KingsGuard operator compares the live video with the listed photo before anyone is alerted.

  4. 4

    Alerted

The shop owner gets an alert, and our operator contacts police with the location and a live description.

Listed only when

A crime at a member shop has been reported to police, with the report and a photo attached. Never for suspicion, arguments, trade disputes, or rumours.

Private by design

Nobody browses the watchlist, alerts go only to KingsGuard and the shop where the person was recognized, and every member shop has signs at the entrance.

When an alert comes in, staff observe and carry on. If it turns into a robbery, the panic button is there.
